IoT rgb cube lamps

IoT rgbcubes

makefu and I stumbled upon the LEDbar project of hackerspace prague (brmlab). We were intrigued by the simplicity of the box design – some cardboard, hot glue and what looked like to be sandwich paper for the front – that worked very well / looks amazing:

To get the same evenly distributed light effect I opted for some matte acrylic (that I had in a box somewhere) and the first box was built within no time making use of the outline generation @boxmaker.

I then got some samples from Kienzle (the local acrylic goto place) and then after a selection-session 3 more materials to try before ordering the material for 50 cubes.

driving a brushless motor with a microcontroller + L6234d

parts:

  • L6234 Three phase motor driver (essentially 3 half bridges) from the drotek.fr guys (recommended)
  • teensy 3.0 (yeah, overkill – but it was at hand) – btw: Paul rocks – as do his microcontrollers and libraries!
  • GBM4108-120T brushless motor (lying around for a future gimbal build)

code:

  • github
  • what it boils down to
     analogWrite(phase1Pin, sin_tbl[phase]);
     analogWrite(phase3Pin, sin_tbl[uint8_t(phase+85)]);
     analogWrite(phase2Pin, sin_tbl[uint8_t(phase+171)]);

MGF DIY Hydragaspumpe

engraving an anodized aluminum laptop lid

Over at shackspace I used the 50W CO2 Laser to personalize my latpop lid.

I think it turned out really well. The aluminium oxidizes and thus turns white.
Settings used: scanning with 500mm/s @100%.

As template I created a two color pixel image with 1200dpi resolution.

USB charge station

Needing a multitude of chargers for ebookreaders, tablets, smartphones, USB-power-banks, flashlights just didn’t feel right and so I first used a cheap 10 port USB hub from aliexpress – but kept having problems with a good electric connection. As it turns out the hub doesn’t have any nibs on the contacts.

Buying a brand name (D-Link) active (so you can inject the necessary power) USB hub seemed the way to go – just to learn that it needs a connection to a computer to power up the 7 ports.

Some circuit bending took care of the issue:

Fahrradfelge einspeichen

(it sucks donkeyballs)

battery charge magnets

Sometimes you happen to run across a power source without tabs – especially when playing with used/reconfiguring e.g. 18650 cells.

I built these „charge magnets“ from 6x2mm ring magnets with 2mm hole and 1x6mm end sleeves.
It needed three different sizes to empirically determine the right size so the end sleeve would fit.

The electrical contact is quite good:

Yeah, I know, these aren’t NiMh…

Does this count as art?

Can also be used to get power sth out of the batteries.
